In Bioshock, you don't have to worry about either of those unless you're playing on Hard. In a standard RPG, you'd expect to level up, pick up new equipment from head to toe. Your ability to throw flames or ice from your hands. Medical Expert - Health kits heal you for more), and engineering tonics (e.g. for each of these categories, you can have up to 6 active at a time (you have 2 per category at the very start, and unlock the other 4 as you go)In a standard FPS, you'd expect to worry about using cover, and aiming for headshots. Standard shot, armor-piercing, explosive). shotgun, machine gun, pistol), which all seem to have 3 kinds of ammunition (e.g.
There are also Plasmids. These are your supernatural abilities. This game is extreme in neither the RPG nor the shooter aspects. As you progress through the game, you unlock higher ranks of these with improved capability. You also get "Tonics" which improve your characters in small ways, there are 3 different kinds of tonics, combat tonics (e.g. Static Discharge- When you are hit, you release electric energy and harm nearby enemies), physical tonics (e.g. Safecracker- which makes the "hacking" minigame for unlocking safes easier). Oh, sorry, I mean a guy named Atlas who's always talking to you on a radio, and can apparently see your every move regardless of where you are located. With the explosive effects and smoke going off, you can't expect to hit the head too often anyway. This game is all driven by a voice inside your head.
In Bioshock, there are standard weapons (e.g. On Easy, there's no situation except for dealing with Big Daddies perhaps, when you can't run up and wrench your enemy to death. Telekinesis. Mind control. On Medium, you generally will need to use an appropriate weapon and ammunition type, but just shooting for the chest will work well enough. You don't have to think much about where you're going, there is always an arrow at the top of the screen showing you where to go.
I am VERY interested in this game and was about to get it until I read the reviews. I'm not going to buy this and any other that comes with crappy and problematic kinds of drm, the funny part with this is that it just makes people run away and get pirated and cracked copies instead. That's all I wanted to say.
The style of FPS is not new but the way it is adapted into use with the plasmid selection fire, ice etc. This game is thinking "outside the box." The idea is fresh and fun and never gets old, even after playing it several times. I am not a 7 page reviewer, because I don't like to read 7 page reviews when I am shopping. The storyline and charactors react differently and change the outcome of the game based on decisions made in game. I love the open ended story line, and the art deco style of the underwater city of Rapture. Although strange the plot is very thick and fun to follow. The game is creepy and at times makes you jump from the noises. Bottom line it has everything for the FPS fan and a ton of action.
I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game. I enjoyed the run down atmosphere that the game displayed, as well as the graphics it used to display it. What kept me playing was the storyline, which i enjoyed even up to the end of the game. The ending also has a cinematic ending, albeit a short one. To some people they may not care, however i happen to enjoy cinematic's over boring text any day.
The sound was quite good, right down to an excellent antique soundtrack that contrasted with the mood of the game quite well. Given the strict linear style of the game (not a problem if done right), I was forced to march directly down their idiotic (to the point of being insulting) predefined path. Had to get used to the different ammo types too - awkward but fine once I became accustomed. Nada. But I don't personally care too much.
Ran on a fairly pedestrian laptop (Intel C2D 2.66, 4 GB RAM, nVidia 9650GT mobile) on max settings without any hesitation, crashes, ghosting. Right. It's fine if you have an issue with their license enforcement, don't buy the game. A half-star shy in this category.GAMEPLAYI had some initial trouble with the weapon / plasmid switching and keeping up with the foes, so I ran through it the first time on Easy.
Overall, a star shy in this category just for the learning curve being so goofy.STORYIn no way or category could the creators have been more draconian, unoriginal, or unimaginative than in the storyboarding process. The NPCs mock me for being so dense. Full stars in this category.AUDIO / VIDEOI thought the graphics were decent; Nothing to write home about, but solid enough not to complain. Now working on Medium. If you're like me, however, and really detest having stupid crap crammed down your throat, you'll choke on this one for sure.
THE DRMI won't comment much on the DRM because, as a Software Engineer, I understand the plight of publishers all too well. When they came away with such a trite and heavy handed result, they should have fired their writers and restarted the process from scratch. A good story is the EASIEST part of creating a game and there's just no excuse for screwing it up.I saw the "twists" coming from a mile away. My reward. I made liberal use of [Shift] in order to change weapons and plasmids. Drama doesn't suffice for intelligence. For my purposes, the story was an epic fail with the ONLY saving grace being that the intricate knotwork of interesting NPCs with intersecting storylines made it semi-tolerable. I bought the game for my own use and none of their copy protection methods inconvenienced me in the slightest.THE STABILITYInstalled and ran through the first time without any issues at all.
That bumps this category from ZERO stars to one.OVERALLNot a bad pick from the bargain bin if you're willing to endure a plot apparently written by the janitor. (Easy lives up to its name - I didn't die once). This ended up being my MO throughout - especially in the middle of combat. *eye roll*In any case, I suspect folks who enjoy the uber-simple and melodramatic plotlines of comic books will like this story just fine. If I had paid full price for this when it first came out, I'd be LIVID.
